Quick answer
ECU remapping is the process of changing the software in a vehicle’s engine control unit so the engine delivers more torque, a sharper throttle or better fuel economy. A good remap starts with a diagnostic health check, keeps the original file so it can be reversed, and leaves emissions parts such as the DPF and EGR working, so the vehicle stays road legal.
In Birmingham, we carry out remaps on cars, vans and light commercials at our B10 workshop or on a mobile visit, after checking the vehicle is healthy enough to be tuned.

What it is
Every modern engine is run by its ECU, a small computer that decides how much fuel goes in, how much boost the turbo makes and exactly when. Manufacturers sell the same engine in lots of countries and models, so the factory settings are cautious on purpose. They have to cope with poor fuel, extreme climates and owners who skip services.
A remap rewrites those settings for your vehicle and the way you use it. You notice it as stronger pull in the mid-range, fewer downshifts on hills and slip roads, and a throttle that responds when you ask. On diesel vans and tow vehicles, the extra low-down torque means the engine does the same job with less effort, which is where fuel savings can come from.
What a remap can’t do is fix a tired engine. A weak turbo, a sticking EGR valve or a half-blocked DPF will still be a problem afterwards, only now under more load. That’s why we look at the vehicle before we look at the map.
Problems we solve
These are the complaints we hear most from Birmingham drivers before a remap. If any of them sound like your car or van, and the engine itself is healthy, the software is usually where the fix is.
You pull away and nothing happens for a second, then everything arrives at once. A remap smooths the way boost builds, so power comes in progressively instead of in a lump.
Vans and pickups that feel half asleep once they're full. Extra low-down torque lets the engine carry the weight without being revved hard all day.
Constantly changing down to keep pace on inclines and slip roads. More mid-range pull means you can stay in the gear you're in.
High-mileage drivers using more fuel than they should on the motorway. An economy map lets the engine cruise with less effort at the same speed.
A pedal that feels disconnected from the engine. The throttle response can be adjusted so the car reacts as soon as you ask it to.
Caravans, trailers and horseboxes that turn every overtake into a gamble. Stronger pull gives you a safety margin when you need it.
Limp mode, a DPF warning light, EGR fault codes and AdBlue or emissions warnings all point to a fault, not a software limit. Remapping over the top of them only hides the problem. We diagnose and repair these first, often with a DPF clean, and the remap can follow once the engine is healthy.
Before we start
Most remap horror stories trace back to a vehicle that wasn’t fit to be tuned in the first place. So before any new software goes on, we plug in and look at fault codes, live engine data, the state of the DPF and the battery supply, and we save your original ECU file.
If the scan turns up a problem such as a clogged particulate filter, a sooted-up EGR valve or a boost leak, we’ll tell you straight and sort it first. Because we also handle DPF cleaning and diagnostics in the same workshop, you aren’t passed between garages to get the car ready.
From our workshop
These are scans from cars and vans that came through our Birmingham workshop. Each one shows why we never remap blind: every fault here would have been hidden, or made worse, by new software. Customer VIN numbers have been blurred.
BMW 320d
The scan flagged limited remaining distance on the DPF, plus oxygen sensor heater faults. A filter in this state needs sorting before any extra load goes through the engine.
Peugeot ยท EDC17C60
Overloaded, clogged and blocked DPF codes. This car needs a DPF clean first, not new software.
Mercedes Sprinter
Intake manifold pressure, oil and oxygen sensor faults. A remap relies on these readings being right, so they are checked and fixed first.
Vauxhall Corsa
Glow plug circuit faults and an oil life warning forcing limited power. Faults like this are diagnosed and repaired before anything else.
Toyota Proace
Intermittent exhaust gas temperature sensor codes on a van. The DPF relies on these sensors to regenerate properly.
Nissan
Particle filter codes and a high-pressure EGR valve fault. Both systems have to work for the vehicle to stay road legal.
Before & after
This is how drivers usually describe the difference once a healthy engine has been remapped. Exact results depend on the engine, its condition and the map chosen, and we’ll tell you what’s realistic for your vehicle before we start.
Remap options
There’s no single “best” map. A sales rep doing 30,000 motorway miles a year wants something different from a builder towing a mini-digger. We’ll ask how you use the vehicle and set it up for that.
For drivers who want sharper response and easier overtaking. More power and torque through the rev range, set with the clutch, gearbox and turbo in mind rather than chasing a headline figure.
Built around vans, fleets and high-mileage drivers. The focus is low-down torque, so the engine does the same work at lower revs. Real savings depend on load, route and how the vehicle is driven.
For vans, pickups and 4x4s that carry weight or pull a trailer. Smoother pull from low revs makes hill starts and motorway merges with a load much less of a struggle.
Remap or box?
Tuning boxes are sold as a quick, cheap alternative to a remap, and for some drivers that’s all they want. The difference is in how they get the extra power. A box changes what the ECU is told; a remap changes how the ECU behaves. If you plan to keep the vehicle and want it to drive properly, a remap after a health check is usually the better route.
| ECU remap | Plug-in tuning box | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Changes the ECU’s own fuel, boost and timing settings. | Sits between a sensor and the ECU and alters the signal the ECU sees. |
| Set up for your vehicle | Adjusted for your engine and how you use it. | Usually a preset setting for an engine family. |
| Engine data | The ECU still reads true sensor values. | The ECU works from altered readings, which can upset some engines. |
| Health check | Done before the remap as standard. | Often fitted without one. |
| Going back to standard | The saved original file is written back. | Unplug the box. |
Step by step
Call or use the form with the make, model, engine and mileage. We’ll say honestly whether a remap is worth it on that engine.
Fault codes, live data and the condition of the DPF are checked before anything else happens.
Your factory ECU file is read and saved, so the vehicle can go back to standard later.
The adjusted calibration is written to the ECU and checked for errors.
We drive it, re-scan for faults and talk you through what has changed.
What we remap
Most of what comes through our doors is turbocharged: diesel cars, vans and pickups used for work, along with plenty of petrol turbo hatchbacks and saloons. Not every engine gains much from a remap, and some newer ECUs are locked by the manufacturer. Send us the details first and we’ll check what’s possible before you book. If it isn’t worth doing, we’ll tell you.
You can bring the vehicle to us at Unit 18, Sapcote Business Centre, Birmingham B10 0HR, or ask about a mobile visit if it’s easier to have the work done at your home or yard. See the areas we cover.
Stay legal
A performance or economy remap doesn’t need your DPF, EGR or AdBlue system taken out, and the remaps on this page leave all of them fitted and working. Removing a factory-fitted particulate filter means an automatic MOT fail, and the government’s DPF guidance says removal is almost always illegal for road use.
Two things are worth doing after any remap. Tell your insurer, because a remap counts as a modification and they need to know about it. And if the vehicle is still under a manufacturer warranty, check how a remap affects it before you go ahead.

Called up in the morning with a particle filter error on my car, they were able to come out same day to Oxford. The guys that came were polite and efficient and kept me in the loop of what they were doing and how it would affect my car. Took it for a test drive once they had finished and could instantly feel the difference in performance. No dramas would definitely recommend!Posted on Google![]()

I had a great experience with Faisal and the team. I traveled from London after being quoted different prices by different garages for DPF and sensor issues. My previous experience with other places made me feel like they were just looking for extorting money and being quite dodgy, but this garage was the complete opposite. I was originally quoted ยฃ380 here over the phone, but after Faisal did a proper diagnostic with the scanner, he was honest enough to tell me that I only needed a standard clean. He saved me ยฃ260 when he easily could have charged me for the more expensive service. The level of professionalism was excellent. Faisal didn't just tell me the car was fixed; he showed me the live data on the scanner and explained the readings, bringing the DPF pressure down to almost 2 hPa, which is factory-spec What I appreciated most was the transparency. Unlike other garages that tell you to 'leave it and come back,' Faisal invited me to watch the process, explained everything on the scanner, and showed me exactly what was happening. It is incredibly satisfying as a customer to see the expertise and honesty firsthand. Polite, skilled, and 100% transparent. If you have a BMW or any DPF issues, don't go anywhere else! They are polite, skilled, and most importantly, honest people. If you want a job done right without being overcharged, I highly recommend this place.Posted on Google![]()

I cannot recommend Mobile DPF Cleaning and Remaps highly enough. If youโre looking for a team that actually knows what theyโre doing, look no further than Bilal and his crew. From the moment I got in touch, Bilal was professional, transparent, and made sure I knew exactly what the process would involve. Itโs rare to find someone who manages a business with this much integrity and focus on customer satisfaction. The technical work was handled by Faisal, Muzummal, and Yasir, and honestly, these guys are absolute wizards. They arrived on time, worked with incredible precision, and treated my vehicle like it was their own. You can tell they take genuine pride in their craft, whether itโs the deep DPF clean or the remap, the difference in performance was night and day immediately.Posted on Google![]()

Never used a DPF cleaning service before so was a little nervous about choosing one. I read the reviews and decided on these lads and they are the real deal when it comes to customer service. I had a blocked DPF, engine light on, diesel smell coming into the car, fan coming on, rough performance. Very upfront communications, no surprise add ons with billing. All symptoms gone three hours after calling them. Fitted me in the same day. I even had a personal text asking if the car was doing ok after Iโd driven home. Amazing. Car feels like new again and itโs ten years old. I was going to trade it in but now feel like keeping the car.Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust. FAQ
On a healthy engine with sensible settings, yes. Trouble usually comes from tuning a vehicle that already has a fault, or from pushing past what the clutch, turbo or injectors can cope with. That’s why the health check comes first.
A remap on its own won’t cause an MOT fail as long as emissions stay within limits and the DPF and other emissions parts are still fitted and working.
Yes. Insurers treat a remap as a modification, and not declaring it can give them grounds to refuse a claim. Let them know before you drive away.
Yes. Your original ECU file is saved before any changes are made, so the vehicle can be put back to factory settings if you sell it or change your mind.
Often, especially on diesels and vans driven at steady speeds, because the engine makes the same effort at lower revs. If you use the extra power all the time, you’ll use more fuel, not less.
Not until the cause is sorted. Limp mode is the ECU protecting the engine. We’ll diagnose the fault first; often a DPF clean or EGR clean gets it running properly again, and the remap can follow.
It depends on the vehicle and on what the health check finds. Ring us with the details and we’ll give you a realistic time before you book.
On older vehicles the engine software lived on a physical chip that had to be swapped or re-programmed. On modern vehicles the same job is done through software, usually via the diagnostic port, which is what most people now mean by a remap.
Yes, in most cases the engine can be remapped on an automatic in the same way as a manual. The gearbox has its own control unit, which is a separate job. We will tell you what applies to your vehicle when you send us the details.
No. A blocked or failing DPF needs cleaning or repair, not new software. Remapping over a DPF fault only hides it. We fix the filter first, then look at the remap.
On a healthy engine with sensible settings, the bigger factor is how the vehicle is driven and serviced. Keeping up with oil changes and letting the turbo cool after hard driving matters more than the map itself.
The price depends on the make, the engine and the type of remap. Call 07949620189 or fill in the form below and we’ll give you a clear quote for your vehicle.
